Big throw puts Rietmann No. 2 in state

St. Mary’s senior Katie Rietmann improved dramatically on her season-best mark in the shot put to win the event at the Medford Distance Carnival Saturday and climb to No. 2 in the Class 3A ranks.

Rietmann was one of several athletes in the abbreviated meet at Spiegelberg Stadium who set personal records and climbed up the state rankings in their respective classifications.

There were nine boys and girls events in the eight-team meet.

Rietmann’s winning throw of 39 feet, 5 1/2 inches was a season best by nearly 2 1/2 feet and was only 4 inches shy of her personal best.

In the boys meet, South Medford’s Luke Ramirez took the 800 in 1 minute, 57.55 seconds, edging North Medford’s Jacob Allmaras, who clocked 1:58.46. Both were PRs, and Ramirez jumped to No. 6 in 6A.

Rogue River’s Cameron Smith reached No. 6 in the 3A 3,000 with a winning time of 9:47.34.

In the shot put, Trent Snyder upped his PR to 49-0 and shares the No. 10 spot in 6A.

CHALLENGERS FOURTH: At Klamath Falls, Cascade Christian’s girls, led by double-winner Amber Cave, placed fourth in the 38-team Lithia/Mazama Invitational.

Cave won the 100 meters in 12.88 seconds and the 200 in 26.77. Both are season-best times and place her second in Class 3A in the events.

Teammate Sarah Johnston won the shot put at 38-11.5, tied for third in 3A.

Kara Ash added a win in the triple jump (32-5.75) and was third in the long jump (15-10).

In the boys meet, Cascade Christian’s Jeffrey Fairbanks won the 800 in 2:02.63, the Challengers’ Riley Dexter took the high jump at 6-0 and Eagle Point’s Jacob Marshall claimed the 300 hurdles in 41.36.

Phoenix’s Joseph Grace set a school junior class record of 162-5 in placing second in the javelin. Other local seconds were in the 400 by Eagle Point’s Michael Quall (52.57), in the triple jump by Cascade Christian’s Zach Booker (43-1) and in the discus by Cascade Christian’s Haiden Schaan (145-11).

ST. MARY’S 5, HENLEY 3: St. Mary’s won three of four singles matches and remained undefeated in Class 4A/3A/2A/1A District 4 action at Fichtner Mainwaring Park.

St. Mary’s No. 3 doubles team of Anais Fang and Jenny Nguyen posted their seventh straight victory together and Sammy Miller stayed unbeaten in doubles this season. Miller teamed with Leah Sternenberg for a win in No. 2 doubles.

Addie Hopkins’ 8-3 pro-set victory at No. 4 singles clinched the dual for the Crusaders.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 4, KLAMATH UNION 1: At Klamath Falls, Owen Harrington won two matches for Cascade Christian.

Other winners for the Challengers, who swept four singles matches and lost in doubles, were Kevin Wayda and Sam Preszler.

Cascade Christian lost the girls match, 3-0.
