Beavers negate rally, oust North

North Medford showed resolve in its Class 6A first-round baseball state playoff game against Beaverton Monday by rallying from two runs down in the sixth inning to take the lead.

Then the Beavers did the same thing, putting together a five-run seventh inning at North Medford High to secure a 7-3 victory.

"I'm very proud of the way the kids approached the game today," said North Medford coach Brett Wolfe. "To come back and be able to score three runs in the sixth inning like that and that we were able to maintain that kind of team competitiveness says something.

"Unfortunately, all those things were in place for us in the seventh inning, but they just didn't go our way."

The Black Tornado (17-9) managed only two hits in the contest, but David Crofton's double couldn't have come at a better time.

Trailing the Beavers 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Crofton drove a double to left field to plate two runs and tie the score.

The Black Tornado later loaded the bases with only one out and Christian Gillis slapped a chopper off home plate, causing the ball to take a high bounce in front of the pitcher's mound. The pitcher and catcher both charged the ball, leaving home plate open for pinch runner Troy Fowler to race home and put North up 3-2.

The lead, however, was short-lived as Eric Parsons' squeeze bunt pushed home the tying run for Beaverton, and Casey Cornwell's single drove in Mason Shaw to put the Beavers (11-13) up for good.

North Medford's Colton Westfall went five strong innings allowing two runs but only one was earned. He walked six batters but three were intentional. He also struck out seven.

CRATER 3, CENTRAL CATHOLIC 2 — At Clackamas, Kenzie Rohde belted a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to lift Crater in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs at Hood View Park.

Crater (12-15) next visits Lincoln (19-4), a 9-2 winner over Sprague, on Wednesday.

Rachel Ray and Malorie Mitchell hit back-to-back, one-out singles in the fifth for the Comets. They each moved up on a passed ball, and after a strikeout, Rohde delivered her big hit to left-center field to make it 3-2.

The same scenario played out in the first inning, when Ray, Mitchell and Rohde all singled to load the bases. Ray scored when a grounder by Haley Fox was misplayed.

With the bases loaded, the Rams caught a line drive off the bat of Kassi Murphy and turned it into a double play.

Pitcher Renee Murphy allowed four hits, fanned five and walked two. Only one Central Catholic run was earned.
