Barnum paces St. Mary's past Rogue River

ROGUE RIVER — Freshman MaryBeth Barnum scored two goals and assisted on another as St. Mary's opened the District 4 season with a 6-0 girls soccer win over Rogue River.

St. Mary's is 3-1-3 overall and faces Mazama at 1 p.m. Saturday at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Barnum was a longtime standout in club soccer and Crusaders coach Dave Potter was eager for her to join the high school team.

"She's an extremely talented player," he said. "She's going to be dynamite."

The goals were her first of the season, coming after Potter encouraged her to more aggressively seek shots rather than distribute as much as she had been.

Barnum scored in the 13th and 44th minutes and set up Rachel Raniele for a goal in the 48th minute. Raniele also had two assists.

Emily Frank scored in the 20th minute to give St. Mary's a 2-0 halftime edge. She also tallied in the 66th minute following a corner kick by McKenna Barnum.

Lilli Knudsen also scored for the Crusaders, and Emily Alvarez and Erika Peterson added assists.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 8, EAGLE POINT 1 — At Eagle Point, Katelyn Stephens scored three goals to lead Cascade Christian in the nonconference match.

The Challengers (4-1) got two goals each from MaKenzie Hickman and Jolee Rivas and one from Alex Haug. They led 3-1 at halftime.

Madi Nahss tallied the Eagles' goal from 40 yards out in the seventh minute. EP is 1-3.
