Bad quarter dooms St. Mary’s in loss

A one-quarter lull that has plagued the St. Mary’s boys basketball team this season reared its ugly head again Saturday, costing the Crusaders a prime chance at a nonleague victory over Bandon at St. Mary’s High.

Bandon used a 19-6 scoring advantage in the second quarter to gain separation on St. Mary’s en route to a 54-49 triumph.

“We’ve got to learn how to win, we can’t have that one quarter that kills us,” said St. Mary’s head coach Kevin Dixon. “We have a tough time putting the ball in the basket sometimes.”

Senior guard Jakab Bowling scored 17 points with three assists to lead the way for the Crusaders (5-10), and senior Justin Silsbee added eight points. Sophomore Trevahn Foster used a solid second half to post seven points, six rebounds and two blocks, and senior Gabe Mayer had seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

Freshman Nathan Sternenberg also had six rebounds to go with his five points for St. Mary’s, which outscored Bandon 43-35 in the other three quarters Saturday.

Sophomore Braydon Freitag poured in 28 points to lead Bandon (5-7).
