Ashland baseball stays perfect

The Ashland baseball team's perfect season continued on Friday against perhaps the most talented opponent it has faced so far this season.

A pair of home runs from AJ Adams and Jake Scarminach fueled the Grizzlies to a 7-4 triumph over Springfield in a nonconference bout at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

"I thought we played a solid game against a solid opponent," said Ashland coach Don Senestraro. "It's the probably the best team we've played so far. They can pitch pretty well off the mound."

Adams' two-run homer helped put four runs on the board in the third inning to put the Grizzlies (4-0) up for good.

However, after the Grizzlies chalked up another run in the fourth inning, Springfield threatened by trimming Ashland's advantage to 5-4 when Ryan Helfrich mashed a two-run home run.

But Scarminach preserved the lead for the Grizzlies with a two-run shot of his own in the bottom of the frame.

"We can swing the bat pretty well," said Senestraro. "If we wait for pitches we can hit, we're going to be successful this season."

Billy Hansen went 2-for-4 for the Grizzlies while Max Anderson picked up his second victory of the season at the mound. Anderson surrendered three hits and Helfrich's home run but had six strikeouts in just three innings of work.

Because of the wet field conditions in Ashland, the game was moved to U.S. Cellular Community Park. The Grizzlies' scheduled game against Springfield today at 10 a.m. will be moved to the community park again if Ashland High School's field is unplayable.

PHOENIX SPLITS — Freshman Jordan Pond came through with his first varsity home run, an inside-the-park laser to center field, to help Phoenix beat Taft and salvage a 1-1 day at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

The Pirates (2-3) lost their first game of the day, 10-6, to St. Helens before rebounding with the 9-2 victory over Taft.

Against St. Helens, junior first baseman Tim Keith led the Pirates by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, while Pond delivered his first varsity hit, a two-run pinch-hit single.

Against Taft, Phoenix starting pitcher Kameron Kaufman struck out nine with two walks and surrendered one earned run to pick up the complete-game victory. He received plenty of help from Pond and senior second baseman Christian Adam, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
