Zavolta leads Nuggets past Mustangs

GRANTS PASS — Vinny Zavolta hit a two-run triple in the first inning and scored on an error to help Grants Pass get off to a fast start in a 9-3 nonleague American Legion AAA baseball win over Medford on Tuesday.

The Nuggets scored four runs in the inning against the Mustangs (5-2).

Dylan Marsh, who had an RBI, and Joe Johnson each had two hits for Medford, which managed six in the game.

Zavolta added a double and was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

CRATER 11, SOUTH MEDFORD 7: Visiting Crater scored seven runs in the fifth inning to provide a cushion in the Area 4 game.

Hayden Glatte and Ethan Scott were each 2-for-3 with two runs for the Comets (3-0, 2-0 Area 4). Blake Hollingsworth drove in two runs.

South Medford’s Chase Costanti was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. The Colts also got two hits, two RBIs and two runs from Steven Ledendecker and two hits and a run from Matthew Shenk.

GRANTS PASS 5, NORTH MEDFORD 1: At Grants Pass, Grants Pass scored two runs in the third inning and made them stand up in the Area 4 contest.

Gavin Schmidt was 2-for-3 for North Medford (2-1, 2-1 Area 4), and Tavin Passey socked an RBI double in the third for the Mavericks. Passey, a catcher, also threw out three runners trying to steal second base.

Schmidt pitched 5?1/3 innings, allowed five hits, struck out five and walked three. He allowed one earned run.
