Winkler's big hit carries Gold Sox over Rogues

Staff reports

Josh Winkler’s two-run triple in the 10th inning carried cellar-dwelling Yuba-Sutter to a 6-4 Great West League baseball victory over the Medford Rogues Friday at Harry & David Field.

The contest kick-started a three-game series between the two. Game 2 is at 6:35 tonight at Harry & David.

The Gold Sox improved to 9-22, while Medford dropped to 19-16.

Winkler’s blow, which scored Mike Shoenberger and Elijah Smith with unearned runs, ruined a possible comeback by the Rogues.

Medford scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth to get to extras.

Leadoff hitter Shoenberger reached when he was hit by a pitch from Gabe Smith, the third Rogues hurler. After a strikeout, Elijah Smith got aboard on an error by shortstop Riley Kasper.

A second strikeout gave Medford hope, but Winkler — the winning pitcher in relief — responded with his big hit.

The Rogues’ Kody Garvin reached base on a two-out error in their half of the 10th, but the third out came soon after.

Medford scored its run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly to center field by Daniel Nist, plating Shea Scott, a pinch runner for Blake Baumgartner, who led of the inning with a single.

James Bell’s single moved Scott to third to set up Nist.

The Rogues led 3-0 through six innings, including five strong ones by starting pitcher Tanner Simpson. He allowed three hits, struck out four and didn’t walk anyone.

Medford scored twice in the second inning. A Baumgartner single and walks to A.J. Miller and Bell loaded the bases. Nist hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Baumgartner, and Miller scored on an error on catcher Tanner Harper.

The Rogues’ other run came in the sixth when Nist tripled and scored on Kasper’s fly to center.

Baumgartner was 3-for-3 and Bell 2-for-4 for Medford, which stranded 14 base runners.
