Tornado fades late against Tampa

SALEM — The Black Tornado 18U ASA Fastpitch team kept it close until getting hit by a six-run sixth inning from the Tampa Mustangs, who went on to win a 10-3 pool play game in the USA Nationals at Wallace Marine Softball Complex on Monday.

The Black Tornado will conclude pool play today at 4 p.m. against the Portland Blaze United before jumping into the double-elimination championship bracket.

Taelor Mayben finished 2-for-4, scored once and came up with a two-run single in the third inning to cut Tampa’s lead to 4-2.

In the fifth, Danyelle Milam singled home Mayben, trimming Tampa’s advantage to 4-3 before the Mustangs’ big sixth.

Milam was 3-for-3 and teammate Lauren Barry went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

CHICO 6, MEDFORD 2: Medford led 2-1 after RBIs by Alex Isola and Dante Gutierrez before Chico pulled away with a three-run seventh inning during Great West League play at Harry & David Field.

The Rogues (38-17) were held to six hits against the Heat (34-21).
