Stone's big night sparks Mustangs

Lucas Stone was a thorn in the side of the Klamath Falls Falcons on Friday, helping the Medford Mustangs to an Area 4 sweep at Harry & David Field.

Stone drove in three runs in each game of an American Legion AAA doubleheader and finished 5-for-8 overall as the Mustangs won 17-1 in five innings and 10-4.

The former Ashland High standout and Puget Sound outfielder went 2-for-4 in the opener, smacking a two-run double in the fourth inning and scoring once. He added an RBI double in the first inning of Game 2 and a two-run single in the fourth inning in a 3-for-4 effort.

The wins allowed Medford (11-5, 2-2 Area 4) to improve to 7-0 this summer against the Falcons. The Mustangs return to action by hitting the road today for a twin bill against Dr. Stewarts in Roseburg.

Colin Sowers blasted a three-run home run to highlight a nine-run third inning in Game 1 that saw Medford send 13 batters to the plate. Sowers also scored three times, while Ethan Schlecht added a two-run single in the third.

Cody James was 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI and Jessie Hornbrook 2-for-4 with two runs in the opener. Travis Cash improved his pitching record to 2-1, striking out five and getting out of a pair of bases-loaded jams in third and fourth innings to secure the rout.

In the nightcap, Gerardo Herrera struck out seven and allowed two runs — one earned — through six innings.

Schlecht added a 2-for-3 effort with one RBI while Seth Brown had his 14-game hitting streak come to an end.
