RENO, Nev. — The Medford Mustang bats continued to boom Sunday in the Reno Knights Fourth of July Tournament at Reno High School.
But after taking down the Danville Hoots Prospect Elite 17U team, 11-9, the Mustangs suffered their first loss of the event, falling victim to a seventh-inning rally by the host Reno Knights, who claimed a 9-8 victory.
The Mustangs (18-6), who continue the tournament today against the Damonte Rebels and Klamath Falls Falcons, compiled 19 hits against Danville. Jacob Melton led the way, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and four RBIs.
Melton’s two-run blast was the first of back-to-back homers. Justin Geyer followed with a solo shot in the Mustangs’ four-run first inning.
Medford allowed eight runs over the first two innings but limited the damage to just one run over the next five frames.
Geyer finished 3-for-5 as did Brennen Watts, who drove in two runs and scored twice. Joe Johnson was 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.
Against Reno, the Mustangs held an 8-4 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Knights came from behind with five runs on five hits and three walks.
Johnson went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, Jack Thompson was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Wyatt Baptiste went 2-for-4 and Jon-o Gassman added a two-run double for the Mustangs.

CHICO HEAT 6, MEDFORD ROGUES 5: Despite loading the bases with one out in the ninth inning, the Medford Rogues’ rally fell shy at Harry & David Field and wrapped up the home series versus Chico with a four-game split.
Chico held a 6-4 lead entering the bottom of the ninth but with one out, and after the Rogues’ Tommy Ahlstrom drew a walk, Blake Baumgartner connected on a run-scoring double that cut the Heat lead to 6-5.
The Rogues continued their surge by filling the bases with a Josh McIntyre walk and AJ Miller single.
However, Heat closer Brayden Bonner got Medford’s Cole Elvis to ground out and Daniel Nist to strike out swinging to preserve the win for Chico (23-6).
Elvis finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Baumgartner, Nist and Cole Carder all went 2-for-4 for the Rogues (17-14).
