Sanford saves best for last for Comets

CENTRAL POINT — Bruce Sanford helped send the Central Point Comets out with a bang on Wednesday in American Legion A baseball at Anhorn Field.

Sanford, a senior-to-be at Crater High, belted a grand slam during an eight-run third inning that allowed the Comets to close out their summer slate with a 14-4, seven-inning victory over Roseburg Pepsi.

"Coming down the stretch here the last week or so he's really been swinging the bat well and seeing the ball well," said Central Point coach Jay Campbell of the burly right-hander. "It was a good night for him and a good way to end the season."

Sanford also had an RBI double in the fifth inning, finishing 3-for-5 with five RBIs for the Comets (18-20).

Hayden Bighouse was 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI and Devin Massey was 2-for-5 with three RBIs to help close out Roseburg in a game that was scheduled to go nine innings but cut short by the 10-run mercy rule.

Right-hander Zack Zelecki picked up the win for Central Point, allowing eight hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.
