S.O. Riverdogs open with win

Josh Suarez pitched seven strong innings as the Southern Oregon Riverdogs opened their independent amateur baseball season with a 5-3 victory over the Portland Cavaliers at Harry & David Field Friday.

The game was called after 71/2 innings because of a lighting issue.

Suarez tossed seven innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. The left-hander struck out five and walked four.

Steve Candelaia's two-run double wiped out a 2-1 deficit for the Riverdogs in the third inning.

In the fourth, Southern Oregon tacked on two more runs. Taylor Comford opened with a single and one-out later Marcus James reached on a throwing error and Comford went to third. When James stole second the throw by Cavaliers' catcher Jeff Johnson went into center field, allowing Comford to score and James to go to third. Then Patrick Allen delivered an RBI triple.

Kyle Lamson relieved Suarez in the seventh and picked up the save. Johnson opened with a home run, but Lamson struck out the next two batters. After surrendering a walk and a single, Lamson recorded a strikeout for the final out.

Southern Oregon hosts Portland in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. today at Harry & David Field.
