BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Potters use long ball to down Rogues

LINCOLN, Calif. — Charles Middleton hit a two-run home run in the seventh and Matt Lopez did the same in the eighth as the Lincoln Potters came through with the big hits late to scuttle the Medford Rogues 7-5 Saturday in Great West League baseball action at McBean Stadium.

The Rogues took the first game of the three-game set Friday and were in good position to clinch the series as they took a 4-3 lead into the seventh Saturday, but Middleton and Lopez powered the Potters with game-changing shots to set up a rubber game today.

The Rogues (23-19), who could have overtaken the Potters (24-17) for second place in the GWL standings with a win, scored one run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, as Riley Kasper and Joe Bath had two hits apiece.

Middleton turned the tide with one swing of the bat, however, crushing a pitch from Medford reliever Ryan Carle over the fence with two outs and a man on first to give the Potters the lead.

Medford tied the score in the top of the eighth on Daniel Nist’s RBI double, but in the bottom of the inning the Potters again struck with two outs when Lopez delivered his bomb with a runner at second.

Carle took the loss after surrendering four runs, all earned, in 4 2/3 innings of work. Rogues starter Tony Barrios allowed one run on two hits in three innings.
