Pine propels Mavs to split

EUGENE — The North Medford Mavericks Legion A baseball team stepped on the gas in the nightcap after sputtering through an error-filled opener at Swede-Johnson Stadium.

Cory Pine drove in five runs in the nonleague doubleheader — four in Game 2 — as the Mavericks won the nightcap 17-6 in five innings after a 16-11 loss to North Eugene on Monday.

Pine had two doubles and hit a three-run home run in the second game during the Mavericks' eight-run fourth inning. The game went just five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Pine finished 3-for-3, as did Jeremy Scottow, who also scored four runs. Chris Anderson drove in three runs, scored twice and went 2-for-3 for the Mavericks (12-9, 8-8 Area 4), who collected 19 hits in the contest — 10 were extra-base hits.

North Medford committed five errors in the opener and North Eugene was able to gain an early 5-2 lead.

Jordan Frost was charged with the loss on the mound, but went 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored twice for the Mavericks.

Pine went 2-for-3 with two runs, Anderson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Cory Haggans, Michael Paxton and Jesse Hornbrook had two hits apiece. Haggans also stole three bases.
