Pilots sweep Mavs in convincing fashion

The Ashland Pilots stayed in the race for first place with an American Legion A sweep of North Medford on Wednesday at North Mountain Park.

With just two regular season games remaining, the Pilots (24-11, 20-10) are tied for first with Central Point (22-11, 20-10) — which split with South Medford on Wednesday — in the Area 4 standings.

Brady Thomas pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Pilots rolled to a 12-0 five-inning win in the opener. After North's leadoff hitter connected on a single in the first inning, Thomas held the Mavericks hitless until the fourth.

Thomas was 3-for-3 with three RBIs at the plate and A.J. Adams hit a two-run double for Ashland in the first game.

Ashland won the nightcap, 14-3, in five innings. Billy Hansen pounded a bases-clearing triple in the third inning and Jamie Flynn followed with a three-run double in the fourth.

Brent Hegdahl, Ethan Schlecht and Hansen all finished with two hits in the second game. The Pilots, who finished with nine hits, registered eight runs in the fourth to seal the deal.

Charlie Walker and Hayden Evans recorded two hits for North.

Schlecht earned the victory in the nightcap, allowing six hits through five innings and striking out five.

"I was pleased that our bats stepped up both games," Ashland head coach Jeff Turner said. "It's nice to see us put runs on the board and make it easier for our pitchers."

Ashland plays Cascade Christian/St. Mary's in a league doubleheader at U.S. Cellular Community Park at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
