Pedretti delivers for RiverDawgs in split with Pearl

Tynan Pedretti's clutch hit and the baserunning ability of the speedy Ryan Xepoleas helped the Southern Oregon RiverDawgs amateur baseball team salvage a split in a matchup of the top teams of the Far West League.

Pedretti's single to left field brought home Xepoleas in a close play at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and sealed a 6-5 victory in Game 2 on Sunday at Harry & David Field.

The Neptune Beach Pearl (15-4, 7-2 FWL) won the opening game, 8-6.

Xepoleas had come in to pinch run for Vince Ampi, who got the RiverDawgs started by reaching base on a throwing error by Neptune Beach third baseman Bob Cruikshank. He then moved to second base on a wild pitch.

Pedretti's hit to left field brought Xepoleas around to score from second base; however, the throw on the relay was in time at the plate. Xepoleas used a hook slide to avert the tag by Neptune Beach's catcher and touch home plate.

Pedretti went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Chris Lewis and Nate Etheridge both added a pair of hits for Southern Oregon.

In the opener, the RiverDawgs (12-5, 8-3 FWL) tallied five runs in the first inning, but Neptune Beach notched four runs in both the third and eighth innings for a comeback victory.

Brent Gillespie went 3-for-4, while Etheridge, Chris Streeter and Clint Brill all had two hits.

EUGENE 8-5, MEDFORD 3-4 — At Eugene, the Eugene Challengers dealt the Medford Mustangs their first Area 4 losses of the young season at Swede Johnson Stadium.

Medford's Billy Hansen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Ethan Schlecht 2-for-3 with an RBI and Charlie Walker and Nate Namanny both 2-for-3 in the second game, when Eugene's Garrett Harpole hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to put the Challengers ahead 5-2.

Zach Eyster pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and four walks against the Mustangs (10-8, 2-2 Area 4) in the opener.

NORTH SPLITS — At Corvallis, the North Medford Mavericks finished in fifth place at the 10-team Corvallis Summer Slam Woodbat Tournament after losing to Corvallis and then beating North Eugene.

Micah Brown pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks, Taylor Raff went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Jared Evans finished 2-for-3 with a run in the victory over North Eugene. David Crofton connected on a two-out RBI single to give the Mavericks (16-4) a 1-0 lead in the first inning against the Highlanders.

Crofton and Brett Pearson were both 2-for-3 against Corvallis, which got a two-run double from Kyle Storm with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning. Storm's hit broke a 1-all tie.

North Medford finished 3-2 at the tournament.
