MADISON, Miss. — Central Point golfer Kiana Oshiro battled a tough field, incessant rain and flooded grounds to place second in the abbreviated Trusted Choice Big “I” National Championship Wednesday at Annandale Golf Club.
Oshiro shot the best score of the second — and final — round with a 2-under 70, giving her a 146 final score. In the first round, she went without a birdie and shot 76.
Emily Hawkins, of Lexington, North Carolina, won the Girls Division with a 70-71—141. Phoebe Brinker, of Wilmington, Delaware, finished third with scores of 74-75—149.
The tournament was scheduled for four rounds, Monday to Thursday. The Boys Division teed off Monday morning, but play was postponed before the girls could go out.
On Tuesday, Oshiro got in five holes before flooding forced a suspension of play. She returned to the course in the middle of the afternoon and completed the round.
The girls finished their second round Wednesday before wet terrain again halted play.
The boys completed their second round Thursday to end the tournament.
Oshiro, who will enroll later this month and play golf at Western Texas College in Snyder, started on the back nine Wednesday and, by the turn, made three birdies against one bogey. She got it to 3 under with a birdie on her 10th hole.
“I was really happy about that,” she said, “because I find the back nine a lot more difficult. It has more water in play.”
She alternated birdies and bogeys on the first four holes of her second nine before finishing with five pars.
“It was a good finish,” she said.
She and Hawkins were the only players under par in the final round.
“Over the summer, my game has improved a bit, especially in tournaments,” said Oshiro, who will play an event in Dallas before school begins. “I feel like I’ve been more focused, and I know a lot more what to do going into each day.”
Among her events, Oshiro placed second in the American Junior Golf Association tournament at Centennial Golf Club in June.
