Mustangs weather Cardinals

Medford's ace Logan Odom struckout six of the first nine batters he faced and stormy weather conditions helped the Mustangs flush away the Vancouver Cardinals 7-4 in a seven-inning American Legion AAA baseball game on Saturday at Harry & David Field.

Odom pitched five innings allowing two runs — both unearned — to go with seven strikeouts. Neil Emerson worked the final two innings before the game and the nightcap, were called off in the bottom of the seventh because of thunderstorms.

Griff Boyd provided Odom with an early solo home run and John Adamson's two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth led to a three-run frame for the Mustangs (16-5).

Odom was pulled from the mound with a comfortable 6-2 lead and Emerson had to pitch himself and the Mustangs out of trouble in relief.

The former Phoenix High star was able to escape the sixth inning, but not before allowing two runs and the Cardinals were able cut the margin to just two.

But in the seventh, Emerson redeemed himself by retiring the side in order in what would be the game's final inning.

As the Mustangs were going up to bat, umpires called the game.

Dustin Smith went 3-for-4, scored three times and drove in a run for the Mustangs while Kory Locken went 2-for-3, scored one run, drove in a run and stole a pair of bases.
