Mustangs stymie Canby in Legion twin bill

Jared Smith and a handful of his Medford Mustangs put on a pitching clinic Tuesday in sweeping a doubleheader with Canby in American Legion AAA action at Harry & David Field.

Smith, a former South Medford High standout, allowed only two baserunners to earn a 10-0 victory in the six-inning opener. Sam Gaviglio, Griff Boyd and Zack Earle combined on a two-hitter in the nightcap as the Mustangs secured the sweep with an 11-0 triumph in five innings.

Smith has yet to allow an earned run this season in 18 innings of work. His no-hitter Tuesday included a two-out walk in the second inning and a hit batter to lead off the fifth inning. Canby didn't threaten to score on either occasion.

"Jared just had everything going," said Mustangs manager Sandee Kensinger. "He's well-rested and had good zip on his fastball and good command."

Smith struck out four batters and needed only 62 pitches in the win.

"I really can't think of any balls that were no-hit savers," Kensinger said of the opener. "Everything was pretty much all routine."

Logan Odom was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Lewis Sebrell 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Medford (12-4) in the opener. Dustin Smith and Kody Stevens were each 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Mustangs, who wrapped up play in the Best of the West Wood Bat Challenge on Sunday.

"I think they enjoyed having those metal bats in their hands," Kensinger said of his Mustangs, who have now reached double figures in scoring in three of their last four games. "We've got some guys that can do some damage."

In Game 2, the Mustangs used a nine-run first inning to pull away and afford Kensinger the opportunity to get two innings of work from three different pitchers.

Earle plated three runs for Medford, while Colin Sowers was 2-for-2 with one RBI and Blake Mitchell 2-for-3 with one RBI.

NORTH JACKSON 11-5, SOUTH MEDFORD 1-4 — South Medford committed 10 errors and left 22 runners on base as North Jackson swept the empty-handed Colts in an Area 4 doubleheader at South Medford High.

Despite everything that went wrong for the Colts (10-6, 9-5 Area 4), they were still in the thick of things in Game 2.

The Eagles had a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but Nick Groves' leadoff solo home run cut the margin to one for South Medford.

Thereafter, the Colts were able to load the bases with just one out, but North Jackson reliever Matt Smith escaped trouble by getting the final two outs.

For the Eagles, Garrett Davis went 3-for-4, Dwight McLaughlin 3-for-5 and Ryan Adams 2-for-2.

Groves finished 3-for-5 for South Medford, which received a solid effort from starting pitcher Maxwell Britton. Though he was charged the loss, all five runs were unearned in seven innings of work. He allowed nine hits, four walks and fanned five.

In Game 1, Groves' RBI single in the fourth inning was all South Medford could muster.

Eagles hurler Brian Smith pitched a four-hitter as North Jackson won in six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Davis went 2-for-4 and Tim Zomerdyk, who picked up the win from the hill in the nightcap, scored three times for North Jackson and went 2-for-3 in the first contest.
