Mustangs stumble with title game on horizon

With their berth in the Southern Oregon Classic title game already clinched, the Medford Mustangs baseball team came out flat in a 7-4 loss to the Las Vegas Aces at Harry & David Field on Saturday.

The Mustangs (12-7), who are 2-1 in the American Legion baseball tournament, will play the Red Bluff Bulls in the championship contest at 1:30 p.m. today at Harry & David Field.

The Bulls are 3-1 in the tourney, with their lone loss coming Friday in a 14-0 contest against Medford.

Las Vegas jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Medford took control in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cody Hoff's two-run single to left field with the bases loaded drove in Isaiah Luzny and Charlie Walker, who led off the inning with hits. Micah Brown then scored on a third baseman error.

But Medford couldn't generate any more offense in the inning with runners on first and second and no one out. The Aces responded with five runs in the fifth.

Jared Evans' RBI single plated Joe Zavala in the ninth.

Taylor Raff, Luzny and Evans all had two hits for the Mustangs, who will take on the Salem Withnell Dodgers at 10 a.m. before playing in the title game.

Cole Crosby and Robert Lee each finished 3-for-4 for Las Vegas.
