Mustangs slug way to win in tourney opener

RENO, Nev. — The Medford Mustangs exhibited some inconsistent pitching but the offense came through in their opening game of the 12-team Josh Anderson Memorial Tournament Tuesday.

Despite squandering a 9-5 lead, Medford still managed a 16-12 victory against the Napa Riverdogs at Peccole Park on the University of Reno campus.

Napa jumped on Mustangs starter Nate Namanny for five runs in the top of the first. A three-run homer by Lewis Alvarez was the big hit for the Riverdogs

But Medford (17-4) answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning.

After one out, consecutive singles by Dan Katayama, Seth Brown and Garrett Tygerson loaded the bases. Cody James drove in the first run with a single, then Matt Maurer blasted a 400-foot grand slam over the left-center field fence.

The Mustangs added a run in the second on Colin Sowers' RBI single, which extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Napa capitalized on two errors that led to five runs in the sixth inning to pull even at 11-all.

Again the Mustangs' offense responded. Bradey Shipley's two-run homer — his fourth of the season — gave Medford the lead for good during a five-run outburst.

Tygerson and Shipley both went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to pace the Medford 16-hit attack. Sowers and Brown each contributed two hits and two RBIs and Katayama added two hits and one RBI.

Medford faces the Boise Gems in a pool play game at 5:30 p.m. today.
