Mustangs secure Area 4 sweep at Roseburg

ROSEBURG — Medford broke out the bats for 19 hits in the second game of an Area 4 doubleheader to help secure an American Legion sweep over Roseburg Dr. Stewart's on Saturday.

The Mustangs scored 11 unanswered runs in Game 2 to earn a 12-2 victory, and led 6-0 in the opener before having to stave off a Roseburg rally for a 9-8 win.

Nate Namanny struck out six, walked three and scattered four hits in the nightcap. The left-hander allowed only one earned run.

Cody James blasted a grand slam home run in the sixth inning to pad Medford's cushion in Game 2 an finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Seth Brown was 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs, Jessie Hornbrook 4-for-5 with four runs and Ethan Schlecht 3-for-4 with one RBI. Colin Sowers, who scored twice, and Billy Hansen each added two hits for the Mustangs (13-5, 4-2 Area 4).

In the first game, Medford raced out to a 6-0 lead before Roseburg tacked on six sixth-inning runs to even the score. Roseburg scored all six of its runs with no outs.

Brent Hegdahl's two-run double in the top of the sixth highlighted the scoring for the Mustangs. Medford scored all three of its runs in the seventh inning without needing a basehit.

Sowers was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI and Hegdahl finished 2-for-3, with Brown adding a solo home run.

Brandon Jackson was 2-for-4 and Tyson Dahl 2-for-5 with three RBIs — including a two-run single in the sixth to even things at 6 — for the Docs.

Michael Bradshaw pitched the first five innings for the Mustangs, striking out seven but giving up three straight hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Max Anderson, who relieved Ethan Schlecht in the sixth, induced a force play on a bunt and two pop-ups to end the inning without further damage.

Relief pitcher Brady Thomas entered with runners at first and second in the seventh. He walked the first batter to load the bases and the Docs scored on a fielder's choice before the game finally ended on a line drive to Brown in right field.
