Mustangs blow by Sun Devils

The Medford Mustangs American Legion AAA baseball team didn't need any help Saturday against the Sierra Sun Devils at Harry & David Field.

The Mustangs, nonetheless, were given plenty of aid and they took advantage, pounding out 14 hits en route to a 9-1 victory at the Best of the West Wood Bat Challenge.

Medford (9-4), which improved to 2-2 in the tournament, will finish up Best of the West play with a 2 p.m. game against Corvallis today at Harry & David. Fairfield, Calif., and Klamath Falls square off in the championship game in Klamath Falls at 2 p.m. today.

Sierra, from Reno, Nev., committed five errors and walked 10 Medford batters on Saturday, leading to three unearned runs.

The nine runs was more than enough for starting pitcher Jordan Lewis.

The left-hander allowed a first-inning run but settled down to retire 11 straight — seven coming by strikeouts.

Lewis, now 2-0 on the season, finished with nine strikeouts and gave up only three hits.

The Mustangs immediately answered Sierra's first-inning run in the second inning when Dustin Smith drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to tie the game.

Medford took the lead for good in the third inning with three more runs. Jared Smith banged out an RBI single, and Jordan Bostwick provided a run with a sacrifice fly. The final run of the frame came home on a Sierra miscue.

Kory Locken went 3-for-5 to lead Medford, while Blake Mitchell was 2-for-2, Dustin Smith 2-for-5 and Griffin Boyd 2-for-4.
