Mustangs advance to title game

Bradey Shipley shook off one rough inning on the mound and his Medford Mustangs teammates pounded out 14 hits to upend Corvallis Richey's Market 13-3 in five innings Saturday during the Best of the West Challenge.

The win advances the Mustangs (14-2) to today's championship game at Harry & David Field, where they will face the Salem Withnell Dodgers at 1 p.m. Both teams posted 3-0 records in their respective brackets during pool play.

In today's other tournament action, the Longview Red Lions face the Reno Sierra Sun Devils at 10 a.m. at Harry & David Field, while North Medford High will be the host site for a 10 a.m. matchup between the Las Vegas Lions and Portland Baseball Club and a 1 p.m. game between Corvallis and the Northwest Star Academy.

In Saturday's triumph, Shipley struck out 10 in five innings and walked four to improve his pitching record to 3-0. Corvallis scored all of its runs in the second inning.

The Mustangs built a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Max Gordon was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Zack Earle drew a walk before Chris Bradshaw laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away on an attempt to nab Gordon at third. Gordon scored on the error and Earle advanced to third, while Bradshaw was thrown out at second base.

Garrett Tygerson followed with an RBI double and Griff Boyd singled home Tygerson.

After Corvallis tied the game in the top of the second, Medford answered with three more runs in its half of the inning on a pair of sacrifice fly balls by Earle and Ian Kendall and a bases-loaded walk to Tygerson.

The Mustangs closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth with two outs when Bradshaw singled and went to third on another double by Tygerson. Kendall followed with a two-run double and was plated on a single by Boyd for the game-ender.

Bradshaw finished 3-for-3 with one run scored, while Tygerson was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Kendall was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs and Boyd 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Lewis Sebrell went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI and joined Ashland teammates Tygerson and Kendall as the only players to smack extra-base hits.
