Medford Mustangs salvage Area 4 split at Roseburg

ROSEBURG — The Medford Mustangs were blanked in the opener, then erupted for 12 runs to salvage a split in an American Legion AAA Area 4 doubleheader against the Roseburg Dr. Stewart's Saturday.

In Game 2, Mustangs starter Bradey Shipley tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts. Vince Ampi's first-inning single accounted for the Docs' only hit. Shipley retired nine batters in a row at one point until he issued a one-out walk in the sixth.

Roseburg scored an unearned run in the third inning.

Medford (16-4, 4-2 Area 4) blew the game open with an eight-run outburst in the sixth. The Mustangs combined six hits with three walks and a hit batter.

Colin Sowers opened the rally with a bunt single and contributed a bases-loaded walk. Dan Katayama, who got hit by a pitch and scored a run, also added a two-run single in the frame.

In the opener, Jackson struck out four and walked two.

Sowers collected the Mustangs' first hit with a one-out single in the sixth. Katayama followed with a single to put runners on first and third, but Jackson got out of the jam.
