Mavericks split twin bill in Eugene

EUGENE — Jordan Ragan's five-inning gem led North Medford to a 9-2 win over Churchill, but the Mavericks had to settle for a 2-2 tie against Sheldon at the Best of the West tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium.

Ragan struck out nine and allowed three hits in the first game of the day for the Mavericks (13-3-1), who used a seven-run explosion in the fifth to end the game early by the tournament's seven-run mercy rule.

Honus Kindreich was 2-for-3, scored twice and delivered the two-run single that clinched the win, while Ragan added a two-run single of his own in the final inning.

Against Sheldon, the Mavericks were one out away from victory before Sheldon used a single and a walk to put the tying run at second, then tied the game on a North Medford throwing error. The Mavericks eventually got out of the jam and the game was halted moments later because it had exceeded the tourney's two-hour time limit.

Christian Gillis pitched four solid innings for the Mavericks, striking out five with two walks. North's Brett Pearson was 2-for-3, including a successful drag bunt in the sixth. He later scored the go-ahead run from third as a teammate was caught in a rundown between first and second.
