Long shot captures GP Downs feature

GRANTS PASS — The longest shot in the field, Fin Du Monde, came off the pace to run down favorite Gabe’s Pride to win the featured Don Jackson Memorial at Grants Pass Downs Saturday.

Jockey Jaime Lopez closed fast on Fin Du Monde to defeat second-place Gabe’s Pride by 1?1/4-lengths in the thoroughbred allowance going 6?1/2-furlongs.

Gabe’s Pride came into the race with two allowance victories in two starts at GP Downs this season while Fin Du Monde was winless in three previous outs here in 2018.

Fin Du Monde paid $45.60 to win on a $2 bet. The 6-4 exacta returned $510.10.

Two-time leading jockey Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa posted three wins on the eight-race card to go into the final day of racing today with the most wins, 11.

Kitti Schaub and Louis Zacherle are tied for second in the jockey standings with 10 victories each.

Hector Magallanes is on his way to his third consecutive leading trainer crown. Magallanes has eight wins with Bill Hof in second with five

The last two races on today’s eight-race card will have two of the biggest purses of the season.

The $13,000 Grants Pass Derby features eight 3-year-old quarter horses in a 400-yard sprint.

The Magallanes-trained Corona B Gone has been installed as a 5-2 morning line favorite by racing secretary Shorty Martin.

Corona B Gone, with Gutierrez-Sosa aboard, set the fastest qualifying time (19.67 seconds) in the trials on June 24.

Jockey Ruben Lozano returns to the local track to ride Coronas Bar trained by Danny Montes. Lozano and Montes were the winning combination in this year’s Firecracker Futurity.

The 7-2 shot Coronas Bar finished second in its trials to L Bar D Razle Dazzle, who is the No. 2 choice in the derby.

The last race of the season is the Grants Pass Mile — a $10,000 stakes race covering 1?1/16-miles.

Mr. Takahashi, winner of the Inaugural on opening day, has been installed as the 5-2 choice in the eight-horse field.

Storm On the River, winner of last year’s Grants Pass Mile, ran a disappointing fourth in the Inaugural but is coming off a win in its last out here.

Post time is 1 p.m. for today’s Fan Appreciation Day. There will be drawings for prizes after each race.
