LOCAL ROUNDUP: Melton, Watts spark Mustangs to tourney win

RENO, Nev. — The Medford Mustangs built a six-run lead through four innings and defeated Federal Way, Washington, 11-7 on Friday in the first game of the Reno Fourth of July Tournament in American Legion AAA play.

Jacob Melton and Brennen Watts each went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Mustangs (15-5). Melton, who tripled, scored twice and Watts once.

Medford banged out 13 hits.

“I thought we played pretty well,” said Mustangs manager Nate Mayben. “We didn’t handle the baseball as well as we should have, but we took advantage of some opportunities on the bases and swung it really well, so it was good.”

Each team committed three errors.

Ricky Boortz went five innings for the win, allowing seven hits and striking out six while walking three. He allowed five runs, but only two were earned.

Ethan Whitney hurled 1?1/3 innings for the save, allowing a hit, fanning two and walking two.

American Legion A

SOUTH MEDFORD 6-12, KLAMATH FALLS 3-10: South Medford scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the Game 2 victory and a sweep of the Area 4 doubleheader against the visiting Klamath Falls Cardinals.

The Colts had four hits in the sixth and benefited from five walks and a hit batsman.

Steven Ledendecker drove in five runs and scored twice while going 3-for-4 for South Medford (6-5). He also gained the pitching win with 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Caleb Barney was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, and Dave Valdez was 2-for-3 with a run.

In the opener, South Medford scored four first-inning runs and made them stand up.

Joe Carson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs for the Colts.

Chase Costanti pitched five innings for the win. He struck out five, walked four and allowed one earned run.
