Local roundup: Mavericks steal tourney win

CORVALLIS — Cody Borraggine stole a win for the North Medford Mavericks in the opener of the Corvallis Wood Bat Tournament on Friday.

With the score tied 7-all in the top of the eighth inning, Sprague tried to catch the Mavericks’ Taven Passey in a rundown between first and second base, while Borraggine, standing at third, bolted toward home plate and scored the go-ahead run for the 8-7 victory.

The Mavericks (3-1) will play two games today in the threeday classic round robin event that substitutes wood bats instead of aluminum.

Borraggine drew a walk to get on base and followed by stealing second and third base in the extra frame, which was forced when the Olympians scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score, 7-all.

Jeremiah Huffman went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, scored three times and drove in a run for North Medford, which overcame seven errors in the contest.

Mavericks relief pitcher Tyler Dunlevy spelled starter A.J. Balsinger in the fifth inning and picked up the victory in the extra inning. He struck out eight over four innings, allowing three runs — one earned — on two hits and two walks.
