Local fencers fare well at State Games of Oregon

Medford's Ceili Widmann and Central Point's Bruno Goossens both secured first place in their Epee Cadet mixed fencing divisions at the 26th annual State Games of Oregon recently.

Jason Foster was third in the Foil Cadet mixed fencing category.

More than 8,000 participants competed in 35 different sports at the Games, which is an annual Olympic-style multiple-sport event that provides athletes of all ages and skill levels the chance to compete in several different sporting events.

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Crater High graduate Hayes Smith and team roping partner Ryan Opie finished 15h in the team roping division at the 63rd annual National High School Finals Rodeo, which concluded this weekend.

The duo finished with a combined multiple-day score of 32.66. Hunter Allen of Winnsboro, Texas, and partner Brody Braden of Horatio, Ark., captured first with a score of 5.92.

In the first go-round final, Smith and Opie recorded a time of 7.57. In the second go-round final, they registered a time of 10.46.

Smith will next compete in the rodeos in Northwest Professional Rodeo Association events in Redmond, Corvallis and McMinnville beginning next week.
