La Grande fends off Ashland at state tourney

Short-handed Ashland gave a valiant effort before falling to La Grande, 6-4, in the American Legion A State Tournament at North Medford High Saturday, further straining the Pilots' hopes of a third straight championship.

La Grande scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie and remain undefeated in the double-elimination tournament.

Ashland (36-7) is without a handful of starters who are playing in the Pacific Rim Bowl football game in Osaka, Japan, this weekend.

Ashland faces Salem at 10 a.m. today in an elimination game. La Grande and Roseburg, the lone unbeatens, meet at 4 p.m.

The Pilots trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning but rallied to tie it, 4-4, with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.

In the fifth, back-to-back singles by Billy Hansen and Luke Baldrica started the two-run rally.

A wild pitch scored Hansen, and Baldrica came in on Kealii Cecil's sacrifice fly, making it 4-3.

Pilots starter Max Anderson blanked La Grande in the sixth, then Ashland went to work again. Anderson doubled and scored on a Hayden Miller single to knot it at 4-4.

It didn't stay that way for long as La Grande's Zach Nice and Austin Woodward singled. A potential double-play grounder by Woody Stockhoff to third base resulted in an out at second but an error on the turn to first.

Nice scored on the play and, soon after, Stockhoff tallied on Tyler Edison's double.

Baldrica singled to start Ashland in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play wiped him off. After Cecil reached second on an outfield error, a strikeout ended the game.

Baldrica and Anderson were each 2-for-3 for the Pilots.

For La Grande, Nice was 3-for-4 and scored twice. Woodward, Stockhoff, Tanner Lanman and Blake Partney each had two hits.
