Kendall produces as Mustangs sweep

EUGENE — Ian Kendall probably won't be with the Medford Mustangs the entire season, but the Ashland High all-state player is making an impact until he signs to play professional baseball.

Kendall, a fifth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Rays, played a key role in each game as the Mustangs successfully opened American Legion AAA Area 4 play on the road Tuesday against the Eugene Challengers.

Medford rallied for an 11-8 victory in the opener, then completed the sweep with an 8-1 win at Swede Johnson Stadium.

Kendall's three-run homer highlighted a six-run fifth inning in Game 1. The Mustangs (12-2, 2-0 Area 4) entered the frame trailing 6-5.

Mustangs starter Matt Maurer (2-0) picked up the win despite struggling on the mound. Maurer struck out six, walked two and allowed three earned runs in five innings. The Challengers got to Maurer for two runs in each of the first three innings.

Medford received two hits each from Colin Sowers, Dan Katayama, Seth Brown, Garrett Tygerson, Cody James and Nick Hall.

In Game 2, Kendall pitched five strong innings and Bradey Shipley preserved the victory with two innings of scoreless relief for his first save of the season.

Kendall (2-0) struck out seven and had no walks in five innings.

Maurer went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to spark the Mustangs' offense.

Medford took a 1-0 lead in the second when Cody James singled and Maurer produced an RBI double.

In the third, Medford pushed across another run after Sowers opened with a double and scored on an error on Brown's groundball.

Maurer's second double of the game scored James to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead in the sixth.

Tygerson's RBI single and a two-run single by Lucas Stone were the big hits in Medford's five-run seventh.
