James' bat sparks Mavericks

Cody James was batting close to .600 for the North Medford Mavericks entering Thursday's American Legion A Area 4 doubleheader against North Coos.

The Mavericks' leading hitter boosted his average to over .600 after North Medford swept the visitors, 6-1 and 8-4, at North Medford High.

James combined to go 5-for-6 with five RBIs in the twin bill.

"(James) is the power hitter in our lineup," North Medford coach Brett Wolfe said. "He's generating good bat speed and can hit with power to all fields."

In the opener, North Medford (13-3, 12-2 Area 4) received a complete-game performance from Chris Anderson in his second start of the season. Anderson (1-1) struck out four and walked two.

"(Anderson) was able to throw strikes and get his curveball over," said Wolfe. "He limited base runners."

James went 3-for-3, including a fourth-inning RBI triple, and Chris Bradshaw added two hits and scored twice in Game 1.

The Mavericks used four doubles to jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. Hayden Wolfe and Bradshaw started the rally with consecutive doubles and James followed with a two-run double. After Mark Cokenour walked, Travis Cash belted another two-run double. Cash scored the final run on an RBI single by Jessie Hornbrook.

Bradshaw collected two more hits in Game 2 along with Hayden Wolfe, James and Cash.

"We showed good poise and focus, especially after a delay," said coach Wolfe after the doubleheader was delayed three hours because of a miscommunication with North Coos.
