Heat clamps down on Rogues

CHICO, Calif. — Medford struggled to put together any form of offense and that allowed Chico to extend its lead in the Great West League with a 7-1 win Tuesday to open the second half of the summer season.

Chico pitchers Blake Hannah and Reid McLaughlin combined to limit the visiting Rogues (26-22) to only two hits through seven innings to set the tone for the Heat (38-11). Medford finished with three hits.

Blake Baumgartner’s two-out single in the second inning and a one-out single in the third by Mitchell Neunborn, who was erased on an ensuing double play, was all the offense Medford could muster in the first seven innings as Chico built a 7-0 cushion.

On the flip side, Chico tallied two runs in the first inning off Rogues starter Robby Ahlstrom on a two-out single by Wyatt Branch, and then broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning that was highlighted by a two-run single by Tanner Roundy.

Medford finally broke through in the eighth with a leadoff walk to Baumgartner and double by Cole Elvis. Former North Medford High standout Tate Cowden followed with an RBI groundout to break the scoreless drought.
