Medford Rogues catcher Cole Elvis capitalized on his chance to play hero after sitting out the opening nine innings of Thursday’s Great West League clash with Yuba-Sutter, ripping a one-out walk-off single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Rogues to a 2-1 victory at Harry & David Field.
Elvis had come on in the top of the 10th in relief of Joe Bath, who was behind the plate in regulation and capped off a key play to keep the game tied in the ninth inning with his relay tag off a throw from left fielder Josh McIntyre for the third out.
After Tommy Ahlstrom sat the Gold Sox down in order in the 10th, Medford’s Brandon Bena reached on an error, Mitchell Neunborn singled and Chad Pike was walked to open the door for the Rogues’ third straight win.
Yuba-Sutter reliever Dalton Bishop got Josh Congdon to fly out to first base before Elvis came through with his game-winning single to break an 0-for-14 drought by the Rogues with runners in scoring position Thursday night.
Medford (9-6) swept the three-game series with Yuba-Sutter (3-10) and will look to keep up its winning ways at 6:35 tonight when the Rogues open another three-game homestand against GWL-leading Chico (11-2).
Neunborn supplied the lone run in regulation for the Rogues with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning, pushing him to four homers this summer and moving him into a tie for the GWL lead in that category with teammate Kody Garvin. Neunborn finished 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
The Gold Sox tied the game at 1-all in the sixth inning after Brody Clifford singled with two outs and scored on a double by Darrel Doll. Clifford went 3-for4-5 with one run for Yuba-Sutter.
Medford starter Brandon Ross limited the Gold Sox to three hits with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings, and reliever Bobby Voortmeyer scattered three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three scoreless innings of relief.
