Eagles fly away with must-have win

GRANTS PASS — The North Jackson Eagles American Legion A baseball team needed a big-time rally to survive and advance to this weekend's state tournament.

The Eagles used a seven-run second inning to overcome an early five-run deficit and cruise to a 17-7 five-inning victory over Sheldon at All Sports Park on Tuesday.

Eagle Point will play North Eugene in the state tourney at 9 a.m. on Friday at Anhorn Field in Central Point.

Eric Skogseth finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs. He hit a two-run single in the second inning during his team's comeback performance. Sheldon led 5-0 after its momentum-gaining first inning.

Derrik Walls was 2-for-3 with two RBIs — including an RBI double in the second — Johnny Wilkerson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Daniel Morgan contributed a double and three RBIs.

Ty Atler earned the win after allowing six hits and recording seven strikeouts.

18U BLACK TORNADO 11, COMETS 4 — The 18U Black Tornado fastpitch team defeated the Southern Oregon Comets at North Medford High.

Hannah Leming finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a double and Rashaun Sells was 2-for-4 with five RBIs for the Tornado. Michelle Draper went 2-for-3.

Malorie Mitchell was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple and Kenzie Rohde finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run for the Comets.

The Tornado will compete as Oregon's lone representative in the 107-team 18A USA/ASA National Tournament in Normal, Ill., beginning Aug. 1 with pool play.

The Comets will participate in the ASA 16A Western National Tournament in Kent, Wash., beginning Aug. 1.
