Compher grabs lead at RV Stroke Play

Former Phoenix High golfer J.T. Compher went out to the first-day lead in the 36-hole Rogue Valley Stroke Play Championships at Centennial Golf Club Saturday.

The tournament concludes today at Centennial.

Compher's 4-under-par 68 is two strokes better than defending champion Mike Barry of Medford.

Compher carded six birdies on his first 15 holes to go 6-under par. Compher lipped out a 4-foot putt for an eagle on the par-4 13th hole and missed a birdie putt from 2-feet on the hole before. He finished with bogeys on the final two holes.

Jimmy White is in third in the men's championship flight with a 72. White birdied the 18th after hitting his second shot to within inches of the cup. Don Gorman of Seattle and Jesse Taylor, another former Phoenix High golfer who now lives in Bend, are next at 75.

Glen Clark, the leader in the seniors first flight, recorded one of two holes-in-one Saturday on the 139-yard, 17th hole. Clark shot a 71 and leads Jim Overmeyer and Kevin Klabunde by two strokes. Defending senior champion Ken Stringer of Portland had an 82.

Clark's hole-in-one came from 139 yards, while Rich Larsen, in the super senior flight, aced the 17th from 125 yards.

Ladies defending champion Tracie Armitage of Medford posted an 81 to hold a one-stroke advantage over Toni Watkins. Watkins, a 21-handicapper, posted her best round ever and has the low net score (61) in the tournament.

In the men's first flight, Sean Byrne of Medford had the low gross round of 76. Curtis Wagner leads in net with a 71.

Brian Edwards shot a 78 to take the lead in the men's second flight. Edwards is tied with Jeff Hamlett of Ashland in net with a 68.

Greg Miller has the net lead in the senior first flight with a 69.

In the senior second flight, Steve Josephson leads in gross (76) and net (65).

Dan Dixon of Medford is in first in the super senior flight with a 71. Dixon is tied for the net lead at 66 with Al Raduski and Larsen.
