LA GRANDE 2, ASHLAND 1 — At Eugene, La Grande pitchers Carson Miller and Woodward limited the Ashland Pilots to one run on four hits as the Subway A's edged the Pilots in the first round of the American Legion A state tournament.

The loss drops Ashland into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination, eight-team tournament. The Pilots will play North Eugene in a loser-out game at 6 p.m. today.

Miller started for the Subway A's and pitched four solid innings, giving up only one unearned run in the second, before Woodward escaped three jams to pick up the win.

Ashland (26-12) had runners at first and second with one out in the top of the seventh before Woodward coaxed Evan Westhelle into a 6-4-3 game-clinching double play. It was a fitting way for the game to end — Ashland stranded 10 base runners, including seven in the final three innings.

Ashland was led by Brady Thomas, who suffered his first loss of the summer despite pitching a gem: five strikeouts, two walks, and one earned run on five hits in six innings.

MURPHY SHOOTS 74 — At Chesterfield, N.J., Kevin Murphy of Rogue River shot his best round of the tournament Thursday and is in a tie for 32nd place heading into today's final round of the Trusted Choice Big I National Championships.

Murphy overcame a tough start to fashion a 3-over-par 74 at Old York Country Club.

The 16-year-old is 14 over through the first three rounds. There are 55 players remaining from a field of 102 prior to the cut after the first two rounds.

Murphy started on the 10th hole and double bogeyed the par 4. He then bogeyed No. 11. He righted his round with birdies at No. 12 and 17, both par 4s, then played his second nine in 2 over.

Murphy was the Class 3A/2A/1A state runner-up this past spring for the Chieftains.

Leaders Greg Bunner and Tayler Termeer are at even par. They lead by four shots.
