Chico holds off late Rogues rally

Medford staged a late rally but came up short and the Rogues dropped a 4-3 decision to Chico on Saturday in Great West League baseball at Harry & David Field.

The Rogues scored a run in the bottom of the eighth and had the tying run at third but couldn’t push it across.

Chico scored all of its runs in the fourth inning.

Chico leads the GWL with an 11-3 record. Medford is in third at 10-7.

The Rogues’ Robby Ahlstrom went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs. AJ Miller was 2-for-2, and Brandon Bena scored twice.

Michael Moore took the loss. He pitched 5?2/3 innings, allowed four hits and two runs, both earned. He struck out three and walked two.

The teams meet in the third and final game of the series at 6:35 tonight at Harry & David. Aces Tyler Burch of the Rogues and Justin Sterner of the Heat will face off.

MEDFORD 13, FAIRFIELD 2: Jacob Melton went 4-for-4, drove in four runs and scored four to lead the Medford Mustangs in the nonleague game at Harry & David Field.

Melton slugged a three-run home run to right-center field in Medford’s four-run second inning. Jon-o Gassman walked and scored on a single by Brady Buchanan before Melton’s blast brought in Joe Johnson, who was hit by a pitch, and Buchanan.

Dylan Marsh was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Medford (6-3), Buchanan was 2-for-3 with three runs and Justin Geyer 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Mustangs rapped 14 hits.

EAGLE POINT 11-14, SOUTH MEDFORD 2-15: At Eagle Point, Eagle Point split in its first Area 4 action.

In the opener, Eagle Point’s Kolbi Blevins was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, Tyler Kendrick was 2-for-3 with two runs and Dominic Fontana went 2-for-2.

In Game 2, South Medford got 2-for-4 hitting from Matthew Shenk and was aided by 11 walks and five errors by Eagle Point (1-3, 1-1 Area 4).

For EP, Darin Marsh was 3-for-4 with a triple and a double, and Fontana and Kendrick were each 3-for-5. Blevins and Devin Foulon had two hits apiece.

NORTH MEDFORD SPLITS: At Corvallis, North Medford defeated Corvallis 5-3 and lost to Bend 10-2 in the Corvallis Spartans’ wood-bat tournament.

Against Corvallis, Nick Samudio was 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases for the Mavericks (4-2), who wrap up the tournament today against Bend.

Tyler Dunlevy was 2-for-3, and Owen Grafton belted a run-scoring triple in the first inning.

Winning pitcher Cody Borraggine went 5?1/3 innings, allowed one earned run and four hits, while striking out four and walking three.

Against Bend, North Medford committed eight errors.

Devin Grafton was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

PHOENIX 8-8, MARSHFIELD 3-7: At Talent, Phoenix scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 2 to gain a sweep in Area 4 play.

In the nightcap, Mason Stella’s two-out, two-run single up the middle ended the game, scoring Toby Croslin, who singled, and Monte Spence, who walked. Liam O’Connor scored the first run of the inning when Liam Serean walked with the bases loaded.

Stella was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Martin Scala 2-for-4 and O’Connor scored twice.

In the opener, Cade Beer was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Stella scored three runs and Spence was the winning pitcher in relief, striking out two and walking one for the Pirates (5-2, 3-2 Area 4).
