Baumgartner's grand slam powers Rogues

A trio of home runs and a big fourth inning paved the way for the Medford Rogues Great West League baseball team which captured a 14-4 victory Sunday, taking two out of three from the Yuba Sutter Gold Sox in their three-game series at Harry & David Field.

The Rogues (21-16) took over in the eighth inning where Blake Baumgartner smashed a grand slam and Daniel Nist went deep with a two-run homer.

Cole Carder added a solo shot in the seventh inning and finished with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs.

Baumgartner, Nist, Riley Kasper and Tommy Ahlstrom all finished with two hits for the Rogues, who got three runs scored from Josh McIntyre and a pair of runs from both Kasper and Ahlstrom.

MEDFORD 12, GRANTS PASS NUGGETS 7: At Grants Pass, Jack Thompson had a double, a home run and three RBIs and was one of six Medford players with two hits as the Mustangs trounced Grants Pass in the first game of an Area 4 twin bill at the Sports Park on Sunday.

The result of the second game was not available at press time.

Thompson went 2-for-4 to pace Medford’s 13-hit attack, as the Mustangs (22-8) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and overcame three errors.

Also coming through with multiple hits for the Mustangs were Brennen Watts, Jacob Melton, Justin Geyer, Wyatt Baptiste and Zac Ankeny. Geyer went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs and Ankeny was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Ricky Boortz gave up five runs, two earned, in 4 1/3 innings pitched for the Mustangs.

NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 19-12, KLAMATH FALLS EAGLES 3-8 — At Klamath Falls, North Medford put together an eight-run sixth inning to run away with the first game in a sweep of the Klamath Falls Eagles in Area 4 play.

Ryan Kloek finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and drove in three for the Mavericks (15-10, 8-4 Area 4), who collected 16 hits in the contest.

The Mavericks’ Tavin Passey went 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs while Josh Baptiste went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and scored a couple of runs.

In Game 2, Nick Samudio went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI for the Mavericks, while Jeremiah Huffman scored twice and added an RBI double.

KLAMATH FALLS CARDINALS 13-12, SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 3-2: At Klamath Falls, South Medford was unable to keep up with Klamath Falls on the offensive end as the Cardinals swept the Colts in Area 4 play.

In the opener, Chase Costanti went 4-for-4 for the Colts and Bennett Smith was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Eagles’ Austin Erickson went 2-for-4 with six RBIs for the Cardinals.

In Game 2, Smith went 2-for-3 for the Colts.

SPRAGUE 5, MEDFORD AMERICANS 4: At Gold Hill, Sprague scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past Medford in the second round of the 11-U state tournament Sunday.

The victory advanced Sprague to the championship round of the winner’s bracket, while Medford dropped into the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination, eight-team tournament.

Medford leadoff hitter Zach Decker had two hits, including an RBI double in the top of the sixth that gave Medford a 4-3 lead.

Also for Medford, Dom Daffron went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Wes Burrow 1-for-2.

Medford starting pitcher Easton Curtis struck out four and allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings.
