White City resident Juan Almaraz defeated Chris Tyler of St. Louis, Mo., in four rounds on Saturday at the Paris Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
The win is the third straight at the welterweight division as a professional for Almaraz, 21. Tyler, 36, came in with a 2-2-1 record and his two wins came against fighters with a combined 10-1-1 record.
With several body punches and combinations to the head, Almaraz was awarded all four rounds from one judge and three of four rounds from another. A third judge ruled the match a split.
Aspiring fencers will have a new place to call home when the revamped Southern Oregon Fencing Center opens at the Elks Lodge in Medford, beginning Monday at 4:35 p.m.
The Elks Lodge is at 202 North Central Avenue.
The venture represents a merger of the old Southern Oregon Fencing Center, which closed its Ashland location this summer, and the Rogue Valley Fencing Club.
The club will offer five classes for a variety of age and skill levels, as well as open competition for novice and experienced fencers. An 11-week class is available for $70 and certain scholarships are also available through the club.
