Wetzler pitches Beavers past ASU

CORVALLIS — Senior Ben Wetzler pitched seven shutout innings for his fourth win and Gabe Clark drove in two runs as No. 4 Oregon State blanked Arizona State 4-0 on Friday night before a crowd of 2,792 at Goss Stadium.

It was the 11th win in a row for the Beavers (19-3 overall, 4-0 Pac-12 Conference), who also improved to 10-1 at home and 15-1 in their last 16 games. Arizona State (10-10, 1-3) has lost four of five.

Wetzler was again masterful as he stretched his personal winning streak to 14 consecutive games, dating back to a March 30, 2013 loss to San Diego. He allowed two hits, struck out eight, walked just one and lowered his ERA to 0.59. In 30.2 innings over four starts, he has 28 strikeouts, has allowed just nine hits and two earned runs, and has held opponents to an .091 average.

Oregon State is 19-1 in Wetzler's last 20 starts. His 28th career victory moved him into a five-way tie with Mike Gorman, John Sipple, Jeff Post and Dallas Buck for second place on Oregon State's all-time win list. Mike Gorman (30) set the record from 1975-78.

Wetzler and ASU starter Brett Lilek each entered the game with 3-0 records and sub-1.00 ERAs. Both teams had scoring opportunities but they matched zeroes through four innings before the Beavers broke through with a three-spot in the fifth.

Walks to Nick Rulli and Michael Conforto sandwiched around Andy Peterson's bunt single loaded the bases with one out. Everyone moved up a base on Dylan Davis's sacrifice fly to left field, and a walk to Kavin Keyes reloaded the bases. Gabe Clark then dropped a two-run single into short right field to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead and knock out Lilek.

Oregon State added to its lead in the sixth off reliever Eric Melbostad. Trever Morrison singled with two outs; running on the pitch, he scored all the way from first on Peterson's double to make it 4-0.

Senior reliever Scott Schultz pitched two hitless innings to close out the Sun Devils. It was Oregon State's second straight shutout and its eighth of the season. Oregon State pitchers have combined for 18 quality starts in 22 games.

The series resumes at 1:35 p.m. today at Goss Stadium.

OREGON 1, UTAH 0 — At Eugene, Nick Catalano scored from second base on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Oregon a win over the Utah Utes in Game 1 of a three-game Pac-12 Conference series at PK Park.

Shaun Chase reached base with one out in the inning on a hard single between shortstop and third base to start the rally. Catalano, pinch running for Chase, stole second before pinch hitter Steven Packard walked to give the Ducks runners at first and second.

Utah starter Mitch Watrous (1-4) then threw the first pitch with two outs to Austin Grebeck in the dirt. Catcher Konnor Armijo tried to block the ball but it ricocheted toward the Utah dugout up the third-base line. Catalano never broke stride rounding third and slid safely into home to give Oregon the 1-0 lead.

Oregon and Utah meet in Game 2 of the series today at 2 p.m. at PK Park.
