Utah downs No. 11 Ducks

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah took the lead with four runs in the fifth inning and never gave it back, handing a short-handed 11th-ranked Oregon a 10-3 loss at Spring Mobile Ballpark on Sunday to complete Pac-12 Conference regular-season play.

The Ducks (45-14, 22-8 Pac-12) played without three starters.

Oregon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when J.J. Altobelli scored on the 12th error of the three-game series by Utah. Altobelli led off the game with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Payne and moved to third on a Mitchell Tolman ground out before scoring.

Utah (21-31, 6-24 Pac-12) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Ducks answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.

After Desmond Santos walked to lead off the fifth and Altobelli doubled to put runners on second and third, Mitchell Tolman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Tyler Baumgartner added a RBI single scoring Altobelli for a two-run lead.

The Utes took their first lead of the series with four runs on four hits and a crucial throwing error by Oregon starter Jake Reed.

Utah added a run in the sixth, three in the seventh and another in the eighth to push the lead to 10-3.

Reed (6-5) took the loss for the Ducks, while Tanner Banks (2-5) got the win.
