ASHLAND — The 14th-ranked Southern Oregon men's basketball team took a 15-point lead into halftime and held off a late second-half run by Evergreen to defeat the Geoducks 77-70 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Friday at Bob Riehm Arena.
Eric Thompson scored a game-high 18 points and David Sturner tallied a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Raiders (15-4, 7-1 Cascade) to their third straight win. Kyle Tedder made four 3-pointers en route to 14 points and Dex Daum added 13 points.
Southern Oregon shot 49 percent (27 of 55) while limiting Evergreen (2-14, 1-7) to 42 percent shooting (26 of 62), while the Geoducks outrebounded the Raiders 37-34.
Frankie Johnson led Evergreen with 16 points, while Marc Taylor finished with 12 and Cody Peters and Elzie Dickens each tallied 10 points.
A close game for the first 11 minutes gave way to a 21-6 Southern Oregon run in the final nine minutes of the first half. The run gave the Raiders a 44-29 halftime advantage, with SOU stretching its lead to 18 points early in the second half.
Evergreen came on in the second half, outscoring SOU 41-33 in the period while forcing 12 turnovers. A 3-pointer by Johnson sparked the Geoducks' comeback attempt as Evergreen worked its way back into the contest.
A layup by Johnson with 8:44 to play pulled Evergreen within single digits for the first time in the second half, and a few minutes later another Johnson 3 cut SOU's lead to 69-63. The Geoducks got as close as five points with 2:44 remaining, but the Raiders made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch.
OREGON STATE TOPS OHIO STATE — At Corvallis, No. 9 Oregon State got back to its winning ways in its home opener against No. 14 Ohio State.
The Beavers defeated the Buckeyes, 195.375-195.000.
Oregon State improved to 1-2, while Ohio State falls to 1-1. The win over the Buckeyes gives OSU a 9-4 edge in the all-time series.
Ohio State's Melanie Shaffer scored 39.075 points in all-around to best the Beavers' Makayla Stambaugh, who scored 38.850. OSU's Brittany Harris was third (38.375).
