Thompson erupts as No. 4 SOU routs William Jessup

KLAMATH FALLS — The Southern Oregon University men's basketball team got better as the name on the front of their uniforms got more accurate this weekend at Oregon Tech's Midland Empire Classic.

Back in their Southern Oregon reds Saturday, the fourth-ranked Raiders were too much for William Jessup in a 92-66 win at Danny Miles Court. Eric Thompson put up game-highs of 28 points and nine rebounds and SOU limited the Warriors to 37.9-percent shooting from the field.

The Raiders (5-1 overall) left the tournament with a sweep, although they had to beat Westminster on Friday wearing their arch-rival Oregon Tech's gold Hustlin' Owl jerseys because the uniforms they brought were the wrong color. Thompson was considerably more comfortable in his own gear, rebounding from a 2-for-10 showing to go 11-for-16 overall and 4-for-5 from 3-point range.

Kyle Tedder went for 15 points and three rebounds, Tim Weber had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists with a couple dunks, and Jeff Bush had five points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Raiders went into halftime with a 21-point lead thanks to a 10-2 run capped by Jordan West's jumper before the buzzer. William Jessup (4-4), a night after defeating Oregon Tech for the second time in two weeks, never got closer than 16 after that and SOU led by as many as 30 when Thompson converted his last bucket with five minutes left.

SOUTHERN OREGON 88, CAL MARITIME 66 — At Klamath Falls, Carly Meister notched her third straight double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds as Southern Oregon won big at Danny Miles Court in the Midland Empire Classic.

Kristen Schoenherr had a game-high 17 points to go with nine rebounds for the Raiders (7-1 overall), who held the Keelhaulers to 34.4-percent shooting from the field and committed just 11 turnovers — down 15 from their Friday total against William Jessup.

Freshman wing Autumn Durand added 16 points and five rebounds for the Raiders. With Ashley Claussen injured and Allison Gida and Demi Sahlinger running the point, SOU shot 42.6 percent (29-for-58) from the field.

Sahlinger had a career-high seven assists with six points off the bench, and Gida contributed nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.

SOU's lead was 44-38 four minutes into the second half before Brenna Anderson started a 10-2 run with a jumper and Durand capped it with another one. The advantage never shrunk to single digits after that.

Meister had her double-double by halftime. In her last three games, the sophomore is averaging 19.3 points and 15.3 rebounds.

The Raiders got to the line for 41 attempts, making 26 of them, and held a 54-37 rebounding advantage.

Cal Maritime was led by Gabrielle Davis' 14 points. Shante Sands added 11 points and nine rebounds.

SOU also defeated Maritime in their first game of the season, 99-80, in Ashland.

The Raiders will be back in action at their own Flagship Inn Classic next Friday and Saturday against New Hope Christian and Northwest Indian. Both games will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
