SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Southern Oregon sophomore Makayla Hoyt was named to the NAIA Volleyball Championships All-Tournament team after helping the Raiders to their first national quarterfinal appearance last week.
Hoyt, a 6-foot-2 sophomore middle, amassed 48 kills and 17 blocks in five tournament matches — good for averages of 2.5 kills on .293 attacking and 0.9 blocks per set. She was previously named to the All-Cascade Conference and AVCA All-West Region teams.
Hoyt joins Sarah Holgen as the only Raiders to receive the award at the national tournament. Holgen’s 2011 team was previously the only SOU squad to ever make it out of pool play, finishing up among the final 12 teams.
Nada Meawad, of Park (Mo.), was named the tournament’s MVP after leading her team to the title. The second-ranked Pirates eliminated SOU in Friday’s quarterfinals, though the Raiders were on the verge of forcing a tiebreaker set, up 24-22 in the fourth.
Meawad was held to eight kills with five errors in the match.
NAIA All-America teams will be announced today.
