SOU stays unbeaten

The Southern Oregon University women's tennis team remained perfect on the year with a 7-2 victory over Willamette on Wednesday at the Southern Oregon Tennis Club.

The match was scheduled for SOU, but rain forced the match to be moved indoors in Medford.

The Raiders are now 4-0 on the year and travel to Idaho for three huge regional matches starting Friday when they take on the College of Idaho.

SOU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches.

But the sweep was far from easy.

SOU's No. 1 doubles team of Katie Ross and Rebecca Weicher had to come back from a 5-2 deficit to win 8-5. Heidi Chiles and Charlotte Duran, SOU's No. 3 team, jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead and had to hold on before winning 8-6.

In the No. 2 doubles match, Mallory Byers and Erin Bruni won 8-2.

Willamette cut the Raider lead to 3-2 after winning the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, but SOU responded by winning the final four matches.

Chiles won the No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-3 and Bruni iced the match for the Raiders with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Byers and Elizabeth Kiger wrapped up the final two matches for SOU.

Ross continued to move up SOU's career lists with her doubles victory. Ross now has 38 career doubles victories, which ranks third all-time. Her 75 total victories rank fourth all-time.
