SOU sports 'hall' making a comeback

The Southern Oregon University Sports Hall of Fame is making a comeback.

Essentially dormant since 2000, the sports hall will hold two induction ceremonies during the coming school year, athletic director Dennis Francois said. One ceremony will be held during the school's homecoming football game on Nov. 10, the other during a yet-to-be-determined basketball game.

The sports hall has 72 inductees, but only one — special contributor John Schweiger — has been added since May of 2000. Schweiger is one of the school's biggest athletic boosters.

"There are a lot of deserving people out there who haven't been nominated or inducted," said committee chairman Stan Smith, who played on Southern Oregon's only unbeaten football team in 1946. "A number of athletes have excelled in recent years and they deserve to be honored."

Smith convened a committee that includes SOU football coach Steve Helminiak, tennis coach Gail Patton and former Raider athletes Larry Binney, Ron Williams, Kerm Bennett and Bill Welch.

Nominations can be made online at or by contacting SOU athletic secretary Rhonda Bergh at (541)-552-6772. The deadline for nominations is Aug. 15.

"This is something that takes time and energy, and we're fortunate to have someone like Stan Smith to push things along," Francois said. "When I came here two years ago, I realized the hall was a little outdated. It'll be nice to get caught up and recognize some worthy individuals and teams. We need to stay in touch and honor their accomplishments."

Sports Hall of Fame members are prominently displayed in trophy cases in the main lobby at McNeal Pavilion, SOU's basketball arena.
