ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon men's basketball team took a double-digit halftime lead en route to an 82-65 victory over Simpson in the second day of the Flagship Inn Classic Saturday at Bob Riehm Arena.
With the win the Raiders improve to 5-3 overall, while Simpson falls to 0-9 this season. The Raiders return to action tonight against Simon Fraser.
Kyle Tedder scored 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting to lead a group of six Raiders who reached double figures. Eric Thompson finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Terriel Thomas posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Jordan Highland and Scott Tiefenthaler added 10 points apiece.
Calvin Smith led all scorers with 22 points for Simpson. Bryan Castillo finished with 12 points and Stephon Thomas added seven points and 10 rebounds. Southern Oregon connected on 41.7 percent of its shots (25 of 60) while limiting Simpson to 38.6 percent shooting (22 of 57).
The teams played evenly for the first 12 minutes before Southern Oregon used a nine-point streak to take a 25-14 lead with 6:07 remaining in the first half. Simpson ended the SOU run with 3-point play, but the Raiders scored the next five points to take a 13-point lead five minutes before halftime. The SOU lead reached 14 on a Tim Weber shot, but Simpson scored five of the next seven points to make it 38-27 at the break.
A pair of Tedder scores capped an 11-2 SOU run to start the second-half, giving the Raiders a 49-29 lead. The Red Hawks used a 17-5 stretch to pull back within single digits following a pair of 3-pointers midway through the half, but Weber dropped a trey on the other end to put SOU back up by 11 at 57-46. Southern Oregon followed that with five more points to push the lead back to 16, and the Red Hawks never pulled closer than 15 the rest of the way.
SOUTHERN OREGON 76, WARNER 55 — At Ashland, Southern Oregon used a big second-half run to pull away for an easy win over Warner in the Flagship Inn Classic.
The Raiders improve to 9-1 overall, while Warner fell to 3-4. The Royals will play California Maritime in the Flagship Inn Classic women's finale Sunday at 2 p.m,, while the Raiders will return to action on Dec. 2, when they open the Cascade Collegiate Conference season with a home game against Northwest Christian.
Angelica Cahee led SOU with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting. Kiara Moore and Chiquita Thomas tallied 11 points, with Thomas and Krysten Copeland tying for the team lead with eight rebounds. RaTanya Newsome added 10 points in the win.
Alexandra Melonson led Warner with 12 points, with Shawnelle Campbell (11) and Katarina Olivo (10) also reaching double-figures.
Southern Oregon scored the first four points and led for most of the first half. Warner took a brief 17-16 lead on Campbell's jumper midway through the period, but Newsome hit a jumper at the other end to spark a 9-0 SOU run that gave the Raiders an eight-point lead. The Royals pulled within three on Stephanie Wills' three-pointer with just under six minutes left in the half, but SOU took a 36-30 lead into halftime.
Cahee hit a shot at the start of the second half to put SOU up by eight at 38-30, but Warner scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 41-40 lead with 16:25 remaining. Nalani Hernandez ended the Warner run with a layup to put SOU back on top and began a 28-4 run, putting SOU up by more than 20 points with just under seven minutes to play and the Raiders coasted to the 76-55 victory.
