SOU's O'Neill named NAIA player of week

ASHLAND — Southern Oregon University senior kicker Corey O'Neill has been named the NAIA special teams player of the week.

The former South Medford player also was honored as the top independent player.

O'Neill went 3-for-4 in field goals, including a 50-yarder to close out the first half and the game-winner from 43 yards to give the Raiders a 16-14 victory over Azusa Pacific Saturday afternoon.

O'Neill is the first Raider to win the NAIA national award since Dusty McGrorty won it twice back in 2003.

On the season, O'Neill is 11-for-13 in field goal attempts and ranks second in the NAIA. For his career, O'Neill has 23 field goals and ranks third behind Brian Pifer (27) and Caleb Theole (24).

Junior linebacker Kenrick Baker was named independent defensive player of the week after recording six tackles, three for loss and two sacks.
